This Old Vermont map sculpture looks like cast metal.  Here the plates are raw steel, with a patina and clear coat to keep them from oxidizing.  This one is 30" tall and each one is formed over a 1" thick wood base.  I use genuine Vermont plates in as-found condition and remove the paint leaving the pitting, dents and scratches made by time & rust.  The plates are then screwed and nailed into place.  Where plates meet the edge I carefully cut and form the metal around the wood base and attach it to the backside creating a unique wrapped look.  The maps are accurate and include details such as brushed metal screws, felt covered back, hang wire, rubber feet, and a numbered identification tag.

Each plate is selected to exhibit a unique look; I strive for a balanced composition in condition, texture, numbers,  and even the placement of the text creating a piece that your eyes will explore noticing new details each time you look at it.   All the edges are hammered and filed and are surprisingly smooth to the touch should you also want to 'see' it with your hands.
